This.  It is just not worth it.  Too many douchebag attendings and unhappy residents.  Almost made me give up neurosurgery.  Turned down my interview.

Are these historically as pedigree heavy?

UCLA cares more about pedigree than USC by a glance at their respective resident rosters. Even the non-top school residents at USC have a considerable amount of publications and honors.

I don't think UCSF is that intolerable. I thought Aghi, McDermott, Larson, Chang were among the nicer neurosurgeons I've met. If you're going in trying to get a glowing letter from Berger then you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

Don't get me wrong, the residents are (by and large) personable and those attendings (Starr, too) are very nice, but the whole tenor of the department is oppressive and soul-crushing.  Ask the recent grads.  That may be how neurosurgery used to be, but there's no reason for it.  Working hard (yes, > 80 hrs a week) and liking your job aren't mutually exclusive.

What is going on with UCSF? It is burning down? Recently did my subI last month.
Berger retirement
MacDermott off to UMiami
Aghi likely to become chair at Stanford
Chang off to Brigham
Mummaneni likely to be new chair at UCSF
1 chief resident replacing Macdermott

Lol none of these statements are accurate except Berger retiring.
