Percent going into fellowships
#1
What percent of graduates are going on to do fellowships after residency?

Is it necessary to do a fellowship with all programs now being 7 years?

I don't think anyone exactly compiles these numbers, maybe the SNS? While its certainly not, if it ever was, absolutely necessary to do a fellowship before entering practice, if you look at the job offerings many specify that they want fellowship trained applicants. Just having spoken to many of the academic guys, they prefer fellowships as well. The whole infolded vs. post grad fellowship adds another wrinkle. While infolded endovascular seems to be seen as a fully valid fellowship, it seems that for skull base, tumor, or spine, the academic places prefer you do a postgrad fellowship. In the end, when it comes to getting jobs, it'll be your chairman and faculty that reach out to wherever you're applying that'll get you the job.

The percent going to fellowship is still rather low. Neurosurgery, fortunately, is still a field where it is not a de facto requirement.

As mentioned, many academic positions are seeking a specific niche, with fellowship training. Likewise, many private groups desire that as well.

At the end of the day, it comes down to training and what you are comfortable with as well as what the hospital you work with is willing to credential you to do.

I've looked into it, and there is no one organizations that tracks neurosurgery fellowship placement. There are individual subspeciality societies, so someone would have to compile the data between them.

I do wonder how in-folded fellowships are viewed.

Hi, you could try checking Doximity and looking at the individual programs to see how many grads go on to do a fellowship. You can also sort programs by which fellowship you want.
