Ortho spine fellowships
#1
Does anyone know anything about applying to any of the Ortho spine fellowships?

While I know neurosurgery gets much better training during residency, it seems some of the better fellowships are with the orthopods (aka Lenke, Rothman, etc.)

I looked into this last year. Lenke will potentially give 1/4 of his spots to a neurosurgery applicant. You can email him if you're interested and ask about applying for that spot. If you got this route then you apply later in your training. Rothman doesn't accept any neurosurgery applicants at all.

Actually, of the 4 spine fellows at Columbia currently, 3 of them are neurosurgeons

This is incorrect. If anyone wants the truth, literally email Lenke or Riew and ask about applying. Don't trust random posters. Lenke is the only top tier orthopod who takes neurosurgeons, which is annoying because they can do our fellowships (there's a Utah ortho guy doing a neurosurgery spine fellowship at Hopkins this year). The other elite ortho places like Rothman won't touch a neurosurgery applicant.

Actually this guy is incorrect. You shouldn't trust his post.

It says one of them is the Advanced Pediatric Spinal Deformity Fellow. Do neurosurgeons do those cases ? Isn’t that all ortho? That seems very particular. Does that person work with Lenke too?

There are relatively few neurosurgeons who do pediatric deformity outside of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, but we are still able to do it if you get the special training - Andrew Jea in Indiana, Mari Groves at Hopkins, Amer Sandani at Shriners...

Lenke is co-director of this "advanced" fellowship, and one of the requirements is having done a pediatric ortho fellowship (for ortho) or spine surgery fellowship before
