Best Functional
#1
MS2, currently interested in functional. Which programs have the best reputations or does it just depend on the faculty that are currently there?

The 2 biggest names in functional are Emory and Cleveland Clinic. Others that come to mind would be Ponce (Barrow), Sharan (Jeff), Foote (UF)

Agree with this. I don't think it's as much institutional strength compared to individual faculty. As you already know, some places that are up and coming have great functional faculty such as Nebraska with Abosch or WVU with Rezai, and some weak functional programs at established places. Eskander had established a strong functional program before leaving MGH.

Toronto is the best fellowship bar none but obviously you can't do residency there unless you're Canadian. Pretty much every leader in functional right now has been trained by Lozano or has been trained by someone who was trained by Lozano.

If you're a resident and want to be trained well in functional, UCSF with Larson and Starr is fantastic. Pitt (Richardson) is also nice. Vanderbilt's is solid as well although not as strong as it was a few years ago due to departure. Baylor (Sheth) is also one you should consider.

Neimat a few years ago. They have a junior faculty member now (Englot) who's a rising star.

Is Richardson going to be director of functional? I thought Schweitzer filled that role.

Englot is a rising star for sure. Earned multiple RO1s this year for his epilepsy research. Plus Konrad is a legend in DBS and device design.
