Hey I was wondering how hard it is to match once you fail to the first time

Hard but not impossible. A few successful ones went into general surgery or transitional year spots and got PGY2 spots because residents quit or got fired.

There aren’t just pgy2 spots available? What’s the most common route after failing to match?

Lol yeah if you fail to match you get to skip intern year and just jump in as an R2 the next year. Fail to match 7 years in a row and you can apply for fellowships.

It’s rare but it happens, UChicago has PGY3 who did that PGY2. You just need to make up NeuroICU time

One of the Hopkins chiefs did gen surg for a year then went into neurosurg

Penn State Hershey has a resident that did a prelim GS year.

Geisinger too.
