Open PGY3/4 neurosurgery residency positions

The feeling of a let go mid-level resident: shame.  Countless hours of hard effort studying and work and call, gone to waste.  Colleagues and friends ask "how is neurosurgery going".  It's a shame to answer.  People say "how out of all people you can be let go, you're so nice and dedicated..etc etc".  No job, losing money being hundreds of thousands in debt.  Tried this and other specialities no one is hiring.  Not really passionate for other specialities, would painfully do it just to make a living and pay back debt.  Depression is building.  Bad thoughts build in the head.  It affects you mentally, physically, socially, monetarily.  It's a huge deal.

What do people do to survive?  I can easily see if no job continues, to have no place to live and no money.  Homeless.  Went from being on top of the world as a neurosurgery resident to homeless.  What a shame.

Endure, persevere, and find a path forward. It will be a long process of grief and acceptance. It is a trying time and you will dig deep. You may need to rely on family or friends in more ways than you would like, but I am certain you will also find kindness and support. Hang in there.

delve deep into the rules and if your program met all rules prior to firing. if not - submit a lawsuit and watch your bank account grow when u win

I sincerely doubt a spot opened at barrow that late. Even with program changes, no one is dumb enough to leave residency as a PGY5 willingly, and there weren't any spots to transfer into that I know of. I'm not sure how much weight to give this....

if you are currently not in a program, have you guys heard of a chairman at a place you're interested in making a temporary complement increase to bring you in? I heard this is a possibility but don't know much more. thx

Definitely possible, but usually there's only so much neck extending the program will do to give someone a second chance. Going to bat with their GME official to fill a spot where they need call coverage, sure. I think expanding the complement is more difficult - not only does the ACGME have to approve it (probably not THAT big of a deal), but then the institutional GME office or the department has to come up with the extra funds for however long you're there for.

*Disclaimer - not a PD, this is purely informed speculation.
