Minnesota folks told us in the interview that they offered Clark Chen the position. Unfortunately, no one wants to stay in Minnesota because of the extreme weather and Minneapolis is an isolated city with nothing nearby so I ranked it low in my list.Clark Chen is smart to accept this because he is getting promoted from associate professor to professor/chair though he won't stay there more than 5 years at max. Having him and Carter leaving together means UCSD is falling apart.

How is UCSD falling apart? Chen leaving will be a blow, but Carter was highly overrated imo.

With all due consideration, if you look at UCSD circa 2009 vs UCSD circa 2017, you may find a lot of people who disagree with you. UCSD is now spinning off Chair candidates like Chen and Khalessi because of what happened there the last few years. With recent superstar residents and junior faculty recruited to the program it will remain strong into the future.

Khalessi? Who is that? He has no visibility or productivity in academia

Young grasshopper.....patience before you opine.

Ask his fellow members on Executive Committee of the Congress and the Joint CV section and they can give you an update on his academic neurosurgery credentials. He will co-run the scientific program at the Congress this year; perhaps he will help select your abstract for presentation.

A pubmed search on Khalessi AA will tell you a little bit about his academic work and his productivity.

OK. So we have an insider from UCSD or a recently matched applicant there who is in the denial state and tries to say that UCSD is still strong. Let me tell you something, even with Carter and Chen UCSD was a mid tier program. Every program has 1-2 superstar residents and 1-2 new good faculty. If Carter and Chen, especially the latter, stayed for another 10 years then you could compete with UCLA and USC level. UCSD is shambles now period. Just take it and chill out.
