Research unrelated to neurosurgery
#1
I'm an m1 interested in a few different fields. Would having research unrelated to neurosurgery like ENT, melanoma, or Ortho research either not help or possibly even hurt my app because it might show I'm not fully committed to neurosurgery? What do you guys think?

Will help, won't hurt, but once you decide on a specialty you should pivot quickly for the best possible chance of matching. If it's ENT or ortho try to make it as neurosurgery-adjacent as possible. Spine, skull base, peripheral nerve, etc. can ENT or ortho overlap.

How would it look having unrelated papers but in prestigious journals like lancet oncology or nature communications.

Everything I've heard indicates these help tremendously. Vast majority of applicants don't have anything like this.
