What does it take to be let go from residency?

(06-15-2020, 07:29 PM)The only thing that will get you fired in residency is getting on the wrong side of a powerful neurosurgery attending, or some chair from another department. Rarely there is a competence issue. People who go into neurosurgery are neither stupid, nor lazy.Contrary to popular opinion, which BTW is completely uninformed, the program can easily let people go. ACGME is built around that, please look at the General program requirements and the specific program requirements. If you have not done so already, read them cover to cover. so best advice, keep your head down and fly under the radar. If the attending is wrong, do not contradict them. As a matter of fact, don’t contradict anyone, nor the nurses, nor the techs, not even the janitor. Don’t get written up. Write ups are ammunition for the program in case they want to get rid of you. Also, make sure you read the specific program requirements for your program and meet all your milestones. And BTW ACGME has a course for program directors, they actually teach you step by step how to keep a file on everyone and protect the institution in case you want to get rid of the resident.  For everyone starting their residency this year Good luck to you, do good work, and stay under the radar. Guest Wrote:

From the most recent posts it seems as though being forced to resign may be more common that I thought. Maybe I'm wrong and its just a few people making repeated posts on the forum but I would like to know what does it take to actually be let go from residency.

Dishonesty/Negligence mainly, rarely is it due to lack of ability

Disagree, firings absolutely happen due to lack of inability. Usually manifests itself as multiple mismanagements on an overnight shift, simple but costly mistakes in the OR, inability to learn from mistakes or making the same mistake multiple times. Combine this with an inability to demonstrate sufficient knowledge for your level or a less than satisfactory board score, or combined with just being unlikeable or an asshole.

if you are let go, file a lawsuit. you will get $$$. no program wants bad press if you have a good case. especially if you're a minority who was let go. and NO program follows ALL ACGME rules. you can easily get a program in trouble. two can play the game
