At some point having more publications no longer becomes the focus. It's great to see people with >100 publications. That kind of output is impressive for an entirely different reason. Once you're in the 15+ range, research-oriented people will judge you based on impact. An MD/PhD has the implication of wanting to do basic/translational research after residency. The NIH now limits your biosketch to 5 pages and you only get to highlight a few publications. That levels the playing field on numbers. Study sections are going to focus on the 3-4 papers that matter, everything else is ignored.
