Step 1 score vs P/F comparison
#1
Was curious if anyone had any input regarding this discrepancy for 2022-2023 match. At my home institution (and many others in the US), members of the class of 2023 (current MS2's) will be taking Step 1 in the Spring of 2021 while it is still formally scored. However, there are many institutions whose members of the class of 2023 will be taking it in the Spring of 2022 following their MS3 year. With this in mind, when our class applies to residency, there will be some students applying with a three digit score, and others with P/F.

There was a survey of PDs that addressed this question. If you have the option to take it as either scored or pass/fail, take it for a score. If you don't have control over your schedule, don't sweat it. Tough to know with certainty how PDs will compare applicants who have a score with those who do not. Emphasis will likely shift toward Step 2CK, so you should plan to take CK in time for your score to be reported on ERAS. Study hard for your shelf exams M3 year, since this lays the foundation for Step 2CK success.

If you are at at top 10 school, I would not risk getting a average or bad score, it will only hurt you.

Reality is that you will not make it past Step 1 filter at the majority of programs. For those programs that actually open and read your application, you may have a shot at interview assuming everything else is stellar. However at rank list time, it will be difficult to get pushed ahead of other interviewees with great scores. Rock your Sub-I and try to match at away or at home.

Sounds like an uphill battle but you never know. It must be even challenging for MDPhDs with stellar pubs....

There were multiple MD/PhDs with subpar step scores this year but still interviewed and matched at great places

Yea at our program we promptly ignore our step cut off to interview for phenomenal research/CVs
