Is UVA malignant?

Both UVA and Emory are extremely malignant and best if you avoid him. Both don't have a real spine program if you are talking about resident level. Chris Shaffrey doesn't let residents touch his cases and barely fellows or senior residents on exceptional cases can work on his cases. Emory has lost its spine program years ago. Regis Haid left for private practice in Atlanta and Gerald Rodts only does simple cases as he is slowing down after his hip surgery. Dan Refai is a young energetic guy but that's not enough to build a spine program.

UVA, UCSF, Columbia, Brigham, and UW are the most malignant programs in the country.

LOL@milennials scared of malignant programs, can't beat the training. Go train at Michigan or Stanford if you want to be as skilled as a pediatric resident.

University of Washington is malignant? I know they work hard because of the trauma volume but idk if I'd classify it as malignant.

UVA and UCSF are tough places to train. You'll get worked to the bone but you'll be a good academic neurosurgeon if you manage to get out in one piece. They are sink or swim environments.

Don't agree with the Michigan statement, but Stanford and Columbia residents couldn't operate their way out of a paper bag.

To be fair, paper bag anatomy is not on the boards and thus not expected knowledge.

Plus, those of us at silver spoon programs don't require paper bags for our booze.  It's champagne from crystal flutes or cognac from snifters for us!

This forum's ridiculous sometimes. Both UVA and Emory are great programs. You will get excellent clinical and research training at either one. Theyre not necessarily malignant, they just work residents hard the first couple years. Both offer dedicated research/enfolded fellowship time as well and UVA sends you to new zealand to operate for a full year for PGY6. If youre interested, go rotate and interview at the program. Dont believe everything you read on these forums, as people are posting negative things to better their own chances to land at one of these programs.
