Thats terrible. Nobody wanting neurosurgery has a backup plan for FM or IM if they don't match. Recommend a year off and apply to something else. Maybe apply to a couple specialties.

Do you recommend applying to both neurosurgery and family medicine residencies? Is that what future applicants should do?

Only if you want to. Most people wanting neurosurgery would not want FM as a back up residency. They are world apart. To each his own. Agree the world needs PCPs too.

Tbh EM might be better than FM or IM and they had infilled spots this yr
