Advice for M2 student
#1
Decided I want to do neurosurgery after summer ended. Did a brain injury project, but no research in the neurosurgery department. Trying to shadow more and make some contacts with residents and attendings. Other than crushing step 1, what else do I need to do and what should I focus on? Am I at a disadvantage for having spent my summer doing something outside of the neurosurgery department, even though it is neuro related?

No, you're not at a disadvantage. Ask for a clinical project from one of the attendings, meet with the PD if you're that strongly interested. Step 1 is the most important thing in your life right now. Do well on it. Do well on your clerkships, do aways when you're a 4th year and get good rec letters. Nothing complicated about it.
