Sleepy program in sleepy town, extremely inbred

Great name to the lay public. Close knit resident cohort. Strong basic science. Easier call and better lifestyle compared to other programs. Above average fellowship placement.

Otherwise, below average clinical training except maybe intraaxial onc (Veronica Chiang is awesome) and endovascular (Matouk). Previously non-existent spine but Ehud Mendel just joined. The old guard are all retiring (Duncan/Piepmeier/Duncan) and with the exception of newly acquired Mendel, faculty retention has been problematic. Joe Chang stayed for less than 2 years (albeit he did get a chair job) and Kahle (fantastic researcher and resident advocate) just went back to Mass Gen. The program did absorb a bunch of local private practice neurosurgeons over the last 5 years.

Chairs who are also program director for a long time also comes off as a huge red flag. Just make DiLuna full PD already.

Agree with above post.

As a SubI I saw 3 chiefs scrubbing one MCA clipping, not good.

Chair is not very approachable.

A lot of inbreeding in the program, leads to groupthink and other issues.

Yale suffers from being between NY, Hartford, and Boston.

As far as autonomy goes, that isn’t just Yale. The entire New England region suffers from a medicolegal environment than doesn’t permit simultaneous ORs or attendings to be out of the room. This is true everywhere between NYC and Boston.

As someone who went to med school in New England and is now a resident at a “powerhouse” institution it is truly a different universe
