MS3 with 40 pubs, P USMLE, one high pass but the rest honors on rotations. Honestly I feel like I need to take a year off and work on my CV it’s so killer out there nowadays. If anyone has advice please let me know. Also top 50 med school for reference.
No Step 2 score. Low ranking med school. Come back in a year or two with final stats.
On pubs…depends on quality and your relative contribution. 1 first author pub with impact factor of X is greater than 10 middle author pubs each with impact factor of X/10. The non case study report, non review paper, mid to high quality journal 1st author scientific study publication still carries a lot of weight. Hypothesis driven (clinical or basic science) > case series or descriptive or observational studies >>>>> no pubs.
Unless you have no first author publications out of those 40 pubs, how would a research year add anything to your CV asides from connections if working at another institution? If you think you'll get a major paper or study done (something that stands out from the 40 pubs you have) I think you would be wasting your time because of diminishing returns.
I'm assuming you're referring to 40 manuscripts, even if you have 15-20, that is still more than most.
