Other Institution For Research

My school has a relatively long break and I plan on doing research during this time. My school right now has a decently strong neurosurgery program but doesn't have research in the field/topic I would like to pursue. I would like to go to another institution to do research. Pardon if this is an obvious question, but how would this be looked on by residency programs? Also, are there any pros/cons to this? Also, any helpful tips for research during breaks would be much appreciated!

It has an obvious answer: discuss with a mentor within the department. On its surface it doesn’t make sense: you won’t be productive unless you take a year off and there is a big potential to alienate your home department instead of using research to build bridges.
