Dick Winn is not a good comparison because his appointments after UW were emeritus and not a full practicing neurosurgeon. Good comparisons come to mind are Art Day (from BWH to UT-Houston) and Issam Awad (from Colorado to Northshore affiliated with Northwestern to U Chicago). Both were chairs and had outstanding issues at their first institutions that forced them to leave including lawsuits but they were able to return to academia later on. Neither was re-appointed as a chair though. What did Issam Awad and Art Day do?

Yale is an unbalanced, research-heavy program that relies on its prestigious name to remain relevant. Cheng was their last hope at getting some operative experience without having to rely on fellowship training.

I heard that Zipfel's and Nakaji's talks were well received by the UCSD faculty and residents. I think they have a few more candidates giving talks before they make a decision.
