This shouldn't come as a surprise, but if there are any 3rd years following this thread with a Step 1 in the low 230s or worse, please, I implore you to save yourself the hassle and hurt this process will cause you, and look at another field. There is literally nothing you can do to mitigate your score, and you will be screened out continuously. Taking a year off and putting out 5-10 Neurosurgery publications will not make up for it. A PhD with lots of primary author basic neuroscience papers in respectable journals may, but that is not really feasible for someone coming in MD only. You really can't underestimate how much 5-10 questions on that test can really have a profound impact on this cycle and your future career. Thank you, and best of luck to everyone.
