I have had the privilege to meet a several of you during the trail so far and you are all awesome. I am encouraged to see how so many potential future colleagues are just that great.

As you go about the trail and this rewarding and sometimes grueling process, please remember to have good interview cancellation etiquette. Just as a way of reminder and encouragement, hopefully without sounding too preachy.

Many of us are sitting on 20+ and even 30+ interviews. While, unlike me, some of you may have the resources to make it to more than 20 interviews, I encourage you to please be considerate of other applicants as well. If you have conflicts that you are trying to resolve but are unable to do so, consider giving both the programs and other interested applicants enough time to make the necessary arrangments to make it to these interviews. In an ideal world, about 3-4 weeks notice would be nice. But please consider not leaving programs and applicants with less than 2 weeks to fill these spots if possible. I know that there are unusual circumstances and that there may be exceptions, but this ought not to be the rule.

If you are one of those amazing candidates with 30+ interviews, while it may be awesome to check out many places, please strongly consider canceling just a few of them. The benefit of attending more than 20 interviews is minimal to non-existent, according to data published by the NRMP, while the potential significant benefit you would grant other applicants would be outstanding and this kind gesture would speak volumes of your great and noble character. Consider not going to those places that you know you really are not interested in going to.
