Interview Invites 2020-21

MS4 here so take it with a grain of salt but I asked several residents about this and was told that it's fair game to email the PD nicely explaining the situation and expressing your interest in the program. Seems to be incumbent upon the member of the couple who didn't get the interview to reach out to their specialty, rather than the other way around. Also consider reaching out to home institution faculty/mentors to make calls for you if it's a program you're very interested in.

Just another applicant but this came up few times: my understanding is it also depends on where you SO got interview at and who is the weaker candidate. For instance: if she got interview at a lower program and that program is a reach for you (you are a stronger candidate) then definitely reach out. It may be trickier if she is the stronger one and got interview at top program, that program is out of reach for you it may not make a difference.

Or have most programs already selected the people they want to interview and no interviews at this point means none down the road/won't match? Just trying to manage expectations. Also it would be great to know what percentage/how many of us don't have interviews yet. Is it 10-20% or 50%? Can anyone comment?

RT... are my dreams crushed or nah

this is just my pessimistic 4th year opinion but i think it depends on the program. based on the spreadsheet i'd imagine some are done unless people cancel

Anyone know what the etiquette is on cancelling interviews this year, would 1-2 days notice be too soon if we get another invite that conflicts?

If there's a conflict, you have to choose one or the other - ideally >1 week would probably be better, but if you don't have a choice - you don't have a choice

There's no travel this year, so the program will still be able to fill the spot and it will give another student an opportunity that actually wants to go there.

Some programs have a freeze time...you want to do it before that lol...but ideally 1-2 weeks. Sure since there is no travel this year, and the program may still fill spot last min, but you don't want to take the chance and ruin your reputation. It came up a few times during virtual meet and greet.
