Interview Invites 2020-21
(11-11-2020, 08:24 PM)Guest Wrote: is Mayo Rochester going to send another round of interviews?

Yes, the first round of invites was only for students who would've rotated at Mayo if it weren't for COVID (since every rotator is automatically interviewed during their Sub-I). The actual invites for the general applicant pool will be sent out separately.

Thanks! How many more spots do you think will be sent out?

Take a deep breath, be upset for a bit, but keep it together. There is still hope and a chance. But also be just a tad realistic and start planning for a backup or what you’re going to do for the next year before reapplying Smile

If there's a conflict, you have to choose one or the other - ideally >1 week would probably be better, but if you don't have a choice - you don't have a choice

There's no travel this year, so the program will still be able to fill the spot and it will give another student an opportunity that actually wants to go there.

As soon as you know you're going to cancel, cancel.  Don't wait until 1-2 days beforehand.  You'll get a bad reputation and your med school may be notified.  Doesn't matter that there isn't any travel this year.  Programs still have to do a lot of prep work for the interview day such as creating itineraries and determining which faculty will interview based on their schedules.  The more lead time they have, the smoother the interview day.  Canceling ASAP allows the program to invite someone on their waitlist and recreate intineraries to accommodate the new interviewee.  You might be the one eager to get off the waitlist at a another program so be considerate of your fellow applicants and the programs.  The one you blow off for a residency interview may be the one where you apply for fellowship.  Neurosurgery is a small world and people remember everyone.

MS4 here so take it with a grain of salt but I asked several residents about this and was told that it's fair game to email the PD nicely explaining the situation and expressing your interest in the program. Seems to be incumbent upon the member of the couple who didn't get the interview to reach out to their specialty, rather than the other way around. Also consider reaching out to home institution faculty/mentors to make calls for you if it's a program you're very interested in.
Just another applicant but this came up few times: my understanding is it also depends on where you SO got interview at and who is the weaker candidate. For instance: if she got interview at a lower program and that program is a reach for you (you are a stronger candidate) then definitely reach out. It may be trickier if she is the stronger one and got interview at top program, that program is out of reach for you it may not make a difference.
I'd say we are pretty equivalent so this is actually very helpful, thank you for your opinions! Super easy to second guess yourself this whole process haha
