Louisville implosion
(08-17-2021, 12:43 PM)Guest Wrote: The obvious outcome is that the vascular attending was deservedly fired, other good attending physicians horrified by the conditions left and good residents left for greener pastures. The cockroaches stayed behind and hid behind non-disclosures. The “Leadership’s” contracts should not be renewed.

Who was this vascular attending, what was their deal?

The name doesn’t matter. Suffice it to say he was one of the most dysfunctional human beings you could ever know. He abused residents and staff and was an all around dirt bag. He was not a good doctor/surgeon either. Patients did poorly. Bad mouthed everyone. He showed up to work once with a black eye because he got beat up by his 18yo son who finally stood up to the jackass. Normally this would be sad, but this guy deserved it because he was so terrible. The residents collectively complained for years. It took time, but eventually he was quietly let go. The Chairman kept him around for far longer than he should have. Actually he kept him until he brought somebody else in to cover him and then fired him. Speaks volumes about the chairman as a man, loyal to no one and he will turn on you when your back turned.

Yea, what about it? What’s the short version of it?

Sounds like my dad. Abused me nonstop and almost pushed me to suicide. Would bully me and mock my appearance (hip size and face). In high school he would wake me up early in the morning just for pure sadism, so that I would be sleepy in school. He would not allow me to leave the home, and when I got accepted into a top college, he purposefully didn't fill out the acceptance forms so that I had to attend a local state school and stay home. In college, I tried suicide several times.

He would go to the supermarket or fast food places and mock the staff. He was an oncologist and openly boasted about pumping expensive drugs on his patients and getting the highest bonuses. He made fun of his patients too.

He got fired from several places, worked PP and retired a rich man. After I graduated from medical school I more or less stopped talking to him. Truly a vile man and they are well-represented in medicine.

Neimat duped one of the UW grads to be on faculty here, poor guy, hope he gets out while he still can.

I am sorry this was your life experience growing up. I could never imagine treating children this way. So cruel. You are a resilient human being. God Speed to you.

We are former and current residents, former and current medical students, faculty and staff from Louisville who are doing a public service by bringing attention to the the horrible working conditions, the terrible incompetent leadership, and patient safety concerns at this program.

Snort - this is hilarious. This smacks of a fired resident whose complaint to ACGME found no wrong doing except on his part, whose lawsuit was dismissed due to lack of merit, and is out of options. Wasn't picked up by another residency program, has to look for rando positions, and now spends his time screaming fiction into the void, inserting an occasional "based on fact" nugget in so it seems valid. It's equal parts horrifying, entertaining, and pitiful.

The ACGME is not an individuals residents friend. Their job is to help programs keep pumping out residents at all cost. A resident stands no chance even with good legal representation. The institutions legal team is bigger, better, stronger.

So I'm a neurosurgeon who's been in practice for 6+ years. I peruse this site every few months - kind of for fun. Brings back old memories. I've never posted up until today.

Anonymous boards are what they are. Fear of retaliation can clearly prevent people from providing candid feedback so there is probably some merit to the format. Everyone on here is (hopefully) intelligent enough to understand that anonymity also provides the ideal cloak for abuse and disinformation.

This thread, however, has taken character assassination to another level and I am compelled to speak out. I personally have no association with the U of L program nor do I have any knowledge of the inner workings or politics of the institution/department. If the posts on this thread were confined to these issues, then I would have no basis to comment. However, what I cannot idly stand by and watch are the brazen attacks on the character of one of the nicest people I know.

I had the privilege of training under Dr. Neimat for seven years at Vanderbilt. He is by far one of the most patient and dedicated attendings I have encountered. Most of my hands on time with him was as a junior and he was always genuinely excited to teach basic anatomy and surgical skills from the ground up whereas most other attendings just wanted to get the case done. He loved to teach and medical students gravitated towards him. There isn't an arrogant bone in his body and he fostered cross disciplinary collaborations with neurologists, engineers etc all of whom felt welcome to participate because Dr. Neimat never had the need to throw his weight around. Most importantly- however - the issue that seals it for me is that when I was a senior and then chief resident - he was the one attending I could always count on to do the "right" thing. It didn't matter what time of night it was or what meetings he had scheduled or what other commitments he had - if I called him and said that we needed to got to the OR - there was never any push back. For those of you who have been a senior resident at the bedside of a declining patient trying to navigate the kubler-ross stages of attending denial on the phone - you will realize how important this is.

It is shameful how some people misuse the safety that anonymity is supposed to provide to malign and attack someone's character. Dr. Neimat is a gentleman and whichever of you get the privilege of training with him will indeed be fortunate.

I'm not hiding behind a pseudonym. I also have no aspirations in academic neurosurgery (thank god). But I won't let some anonymous fools malign the character of a good man.
