True. And OP even if you like Boston more than St Louis for some reason, you’ll have ZERO time to spend outside the hospital there, whereas at least at WashU you’ll be able to enjoy your life. No brainer.

Have to cancel an interview. Which would you pick?

Who knows. But it may be messy to be caught in the middle of a political restructuring

The only reason this is even considered a dilemma is because the Brigham is associated with the Harvard name. It shouldn't be a true dilemma for anyone who's serious about neurosurgery, unless you have very important ties to the Boston area. The Brigham is not what it used to be, and the other two programs are hands-down phenomenal. And that's to say nothing of the likely very negative changes that will hit some of the Boston programs soon

OP here. Very interesting points on Brigham and Boston. Didn’t know anything about the potential instability.
I know Wash U is an excellent program, I’ve just been cautioned by friends (non-neurosurgery) about St Louis as a place to live and have family. My partner thinks it’s also a really nice hospital but in the middle of nowhere. When I interviewed at WashI for Med school I thought the downtown area was pretty depressing. But didn’t see much else during the weekend there. Michigan I have only heard great things, would hate the winters. But would hate winters at all 3 tbh. No family ties to any of the 3 cities.

Have you ever heard a resident says something bad about their program or the city in the interview or meet/greet bullshit? Did they say why they fired their resident as PGY3 when she was their medical student who spent 5 years in the department before matching?

My program blackballed her a few years ago when she applied. This was foreshadowed. No offense to her, she seemed fine to me when I briefly worked with her, but this isn't that surprising and it's definitely not the program's fault. |
