Seriously the editor is to blame. To publish a book titled "Surviving Neurosurgery" authored by a fellow and a PGY-1? And then the PGY-1 drops out? Dude can be a great guy but it just doesn't look good. Don't expect a lot of sales going forward

Every “disparity” must have nefarious underpinnings right? Neurosurgery literature is becoming a joke. And it’s not just us, look at NEJM and JAMA, their commentaries and priorities, same story. Med students take note, people who have time to write this stuff over and over aren’t using that time to operate. It’s no wonder we have waves of PGY1s and 2s who were “rockstars” leave, because neurosurgery isn’t winning about accolades all the times, it’s thankless acute subdurals at 1 am.

Obesity affects lumbar fusion outcomes… you don’t say? Don’t think residents and faculty reviewing your apps aren’t discerning enough to separate real science from this garbage.

Absolutely... Look at those endless systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and perspective without any take home messages... some journals just care about the publication fees...

You realize the PGY1 as well as a UCSF spine fellow are the editors of the book right? The actual chapters in the book are written by a ton of notable chairmen and attendings. Like the guy you are dragging didn't actually write anything in this book, he just compiled it

The full title is: Surviving Neurosurgery: Vignettes of Resilience.

So the aspiring neurosurgeon who wrote a book about resilience, drops out to take a mid-tier job at a consulting firm?

Point made by OP. Should fellows and PGY-1s be editors? The guy is not being dragged. He may be excellent and eventually even more successful at his new position. Heck he may end up being our boss. But the irony is obvious

I misread, OP said mid tier position. That's fair. Whatever this dude does, I think we all have better things to worry about. He wrote some book and agreed the title is a little comical, but if it pisses you off then just don't read it.

Who said mid-tier firm? He is at an entry level position at McKinsey Dallas office. McKinsey NYC, SF and Boston are elite, but their rest of their offices in the USA are significantly less prestigious. Top MBA grads would never go to one of these offices that the NS resident is heading to. His boss will have a BA in Gender Studies from TCU or some regional "elite" university.

I don't know about you but that hardly seems like a good career choice to me. When you become a full NS, all sorts of opportunities open up in the worlds of venture capital, pharma, consulting, banking--you name it (assuming you don't like clinical work).

While I do agree that a full NS can offer many opportunities outside of clinical work, take into consideration the amount of years it takes to get there. That is, if this PGY-1 spends 7 years at McKinsey and eventually becomes partner, he will end up making more money and living a better lifestyle than a neurosurgeon.

His LinkedIn says he's going to NYC office
