First of all the university tried to sweep this under the rug because Mark Linskey was already suing the university. Johnny left and there were many concerns that showing this to the public would strengthen Mark’s side during the lawsuit - which Mark won btw.

Linskey is actually a really good surgeon, probably the best of them all. Frank and Johnny took Linskey’s vascular privileges away, and took away the ability of the residents to work with Linskey.

Do not confuse the “niceness” of Frank with ethical behavior. Frank is the most unethical individual anyone that spent significant amount of time at UCI will meet there. Frank is the one that fired the chief resident because the chief resident testified for Linskey against Frank. Of course Frank did not say that this is why he was firing the chief resident . He fired him 6 month before graduation for a completely BS reason. When he took chairmanship he made the life of every resident that he did not “chose” through the match a living hell. Especially if the resident was one that came through the match during the Mark Linskey years.

Frank is also the person who believes that he has to have a “file on every resident and attending” who works for him. If he does not feel that someone is loyal to him, he will fire that person. The residents are put on regular “letters of concern” for dumb reasons,  just so that their files get padded, so if the chair ever wants to get rid of them, then he can. Frank can say - see this person is unprofessional, we tried to do xYZ and they still did not improve. You see… and the university will go along with this.

When the program was audited in 2015 - the residents wanted to complain, because it was so toxic to be there. But the ACGME people said - oh don’t worry, we know Frank Hsu - everything will be fine. The residents were also told before hand that if anyone talks they will not get fired. Despite the place being a toxic cesspool, everyone blamed the “resident that got fired”.

Maybe things have changed, but always remember Frank’s motto “when a new sheriff comes to town he hangs a few people then everyone falls in line”… the chief resident was hanged alright.

Also keep in mind that none of the residents from 2013 to now call Frank or ask anything from him. There is a reason for it. Who the hell does not call their chair? I suppose people who graduated from Frank Hsu’s program.
