Can anyone who rotated here or have other connection(s) give an account of what this program is like? Specifically in regards to resident culture, operative experience and autonomy, etc. Thanks.

Outstanding place. High volume, significant amount of autonomy. Very collegial and tight resident core. Well rounded with no fellows means that PGY6-7 (and even PGY4s) are doing very high level cases. Great academic opportunities, very well connected. The most underrated program in the country.

I’m a current resident there and I second that!

Must be a UAB resident posting because not what I have heard/seen on the trail or sub-I. Residents did not get along with each other there. Some of the attendings are next level insane, which I’m sure is similar at a lot of other programs. They do have great cases, but the autonomy is poor. I saw residents sitting on stools in the OR while the attending would take out tumors. Have not matched the residents they wanted over the last few years supposedly. The residents there are great people though, a little malignant but expected. Program has a long way to go to be a top notch program.

This is the problem with this entire virtual process. Can’t see anything first hand unless a home student or sub-I. Would love additional thoughts if anyone has any.

Recent sub-I prior to this cycle. Agree with above; glad I didn’t match there.

Huh. Interesting. From my experience there, all the residents seemed to like each other and spend time together out of the hospital. A very good group of people. Cases were complex - good volume and variety including open vascular. Very busy. A clinical program but they do encourage research as well.

Have big name faculty. Wish I went there.
