I rotated at the BNI and Mayo. Nobody is working <70 hours/week (especially PGY 1-3). The ORs are so busy that you're usually operating late. The interns and 2s get in before 4:30, just like everywhere else.

What makes their lifestyle better is the call, since they have 4 residents/year covering only 1 hospital, so the frequency of in house call is much lower than at other programs. Also during daytime hours, they have a lot of midlevel help on the floor so that they can operate from day 1 of residency. They're still working a lot, it's just that the time is spent operating with autonomy vs. doing scut work.

Agree plus both are heavily elective oriented due to their relatively barren population zones. Yes, both get transfers from other sites but those consilts have the advantage of at least some workup being done.

Depending on what census data you look at, Phoenix is either the 5th largest city in the US, or at least top 10.
I wouldn't call that a barren population zone

Barrow is in the downtown district, which is in fact a barren population zones. Most of the Phoenix population is more proximate to banner and mayo. EMS transfers are based on proximity. So unless some commute gets in a wreck right outside BNI, it isn't coming to them. Hence, relatively barren population zones.

Barrow considers athletic ability and physical appearance when selecting residents. Outrageous.

“Why? Cause fuck you, that’s why.”

Barrow’s response to the above.

Id take athletic ability in a surgeon over pumping out meta-analyses on nonsense any day of the week. Not knocking real research. I’ve seen attendings gush over fluff.

Team spirit, resilience, positive energy are good qualities.

If you are autistic and a bit off, programs will automatically reject you, even though you can be an excellent surgeon. How is this fair??

Because no one will want to be around you for 80 hours a week and when you finish residency, patients won't like you either. Be a pathologist or a radiologist if you don't have good personal skills.

Also what makes you so sure that you would make an "excellent" surgeon? As a med student you haven't even begun demonstrate the manual skills and decision making skills it takes to be even an average surgeon.
