Hopkins did especially well. Jacob Jo and Hersh were some of the most sought after applicants this cycle

What makes an applicant highly sought after? There were applicants who had more research publications and higher step scores. What helps make an applicant stand out?

school prestige, connections, personability, it's not all about pubs and scores you know. Personally met both these guys at conferences/interview trail, both were easy to get along with and well connected across programs

I think we are going to see increasing tendencies to take one's own and for one's own to want to stay. Known quantities have always been perceived as more consistent. Every now and then you get a rock star on paper who totally flairs out early on. It can happen to anyone but someone who knows the system is typically more prepared for the beating.

In terms of “other applicants had more pubs and better scores,” it is so much more than that. Pubs and scores are quick filtering heuristics, and they put you more in more of a quartile for applicants than being a strict rank. 260 and 270 are pretty much equivalent scores, for example. Pub number means nothing if you can’t say anything meaningful about your contribution to the papers. Worse is if you don’t know what the papers were even about. It’s also getting easier with LLMs to check the pubs to see if some aspect of the publications are being embellished, like saying you’re first author when you’re 12th.

How many programs are running personal statements through ChatGPT to see if it falls under “sob story,” “my mom and/or dad was a neurosurgeon,” “I had some disease so I can better identify with patients,” or “this actually has something unique.”

Completely gone. It's all about the clinical research arms race now
