Interview Invites 2017 - 2018
No need to be mean to others. If you have nothing good to share, I think most of us would appreciate if you keep your comments to yourself. Some of us have been very fortunate others have not, but no need to rub things on their face. Just understand that some people are in a stressful position.

I am not sure why this is comes as a surprise. The bar to entry to neurosurgery is very high, you are now competing with the top of the class from nearly every medical school.

Just don't.  They know.  You applied.  Everyone else wants an interview too.  You didn't get one.  Someone more attractive did.  That's how life works.

Well, i'm not sure it's that simple actually.  For some applicants, sure, there is a competitiveness issue.  But in other cases, a good applicant may get an interview at Barrow but not a 'less competitive' school that they might be really interested in for geographic/personal reasons.  Is there a way to signal this?

The best way would have been to do a sub-I there.

What could really move a program to interview someone that they did not pick for interview would be a call from someone connected on that person's behalf. Program Directors and Chairs trust or at least give deference to the opinions of friends and colleagues. Barring that, sending additional info and showing interest can't hurt and if you are on their backup interview wait-list, it may move you up the ladder. Key is not to give up. Match is a fluid process and anything can happen.

Regarding a previous post, of course the elite applicants should be getting interviews at any program that they apply to. This specialty, especially, needs the best of the best and everything must be done towards attracting them. So don't worry about them, get to work and increase the chances for yourself as there aren't enough elite candidates to fill all of the spots.

I am from a lower tier school but I agree, if you're from an elite program you should be getting interviews over me. Everyone knows what they're signing up for going into this.

Wow, ENT applications are down even more this year. I should have dual applied. They might have respected my 230s but with 25 publications more than this prestige laden astronomical Step 1 obsessed field.

Actually, for the past few years ENT’s average step 1 score has been higher than or the same as Neurosurgery’s. Just in 2016 the average match score for Neurosurgery applicants was 249 (step 1) and 251 (step2ck) and for ENT it was 248 and 253 respectively
