Is happening to a bunch of us. Try not to worry about it too much.
Would you guys/girls mind sharing which institutions weren't inviting their sub-Is back for interviews? That seems like a bit of a worrisome indicator...
It's not on the institution if sub-is aren't invited to interview. It generally means the sub I sucked/was weird/drew red flags.
More than likely their step score was below the institution's average.

Disagree. I think at least a decent amount of these places accept sub i's that don't have a chance based on their app/don't screen the apps the same way they screen for interviews. Could happen to many ppl doing a sub I at a top notch place. Assuming that every person who doesn't get an interview post sub I isn't weird or "sucked" short sighted

Having a low step score is a red flag. A step 2 that is much higher than a low step 1 can save a sub I and gain them an interview. Not having enough published by the time of app is a red flag. It can be assumed an otherwise strong sub I has stuff in the pipes during their time with us. If they don't capitalize/follow through, I'll pass on giving them an interview. So, I stand by my statement.

Why is a low step a red flag??? Why do you think that your stinkin 260 is any better than the kid with a 230. The kid with the 230 probably has more publications, is a harder worker, and a much better character than you buddy. Oh and there is a great chance that he will be a better a NEUROSURGEON also. Keep living in your fantasy world where a test determines how good of a freaking SURGEON you will be. You all really are full of shit with your standardized step score obsessions.

I'm seeing a red flag right here lol. You're delusional if you think that having a lower score somehow makes you better in any way. You sound just like the IMGs who claim "yea I'm an IMG so I'm harder working than you US grads". What a joke.

Not my point at all. But you are delusional if you think a step score has any correlation whatsoever with what type of resident or physician you will be. There are people that are just bad test takers, but have qualities that make them a much better overall person/physician than you twats who are just good test takers or got lucky on one stupid test.
Programs aren't supposed to invite sub-Is back for interviews. They are supposed to interview sub-Is while they are visiting, according to recommendations put out by the SNS, as an effort to minimize costs, allow applicants to interview at more places and see if there may be a better fit, and to allow programs to gain exposure to more applicants. Programs are specifically not to try and pressure applicants into coming back for a "formal" interview, encourage second looks, etc.
For me, it's a major red flag if programs do not interview their sub-Is while they are there, and essentially encourage them to shell out increasingly large quantities of money/time in one-way shows of affection - both as a working class applicant and as a person with self-respect.

Wow, I didn't realize my vent on not getting a sub I interview would spark such a heated discussion. Where did all this meanness come from? We should strive to be more professional.
I also disagree with the low step score exclusion comments, I also think it is a poor marker of success in general. It only is a marker of ability to pass neurosurgery boards. However, it is a big objective differentiator, one of few. And it is a reality that some programs do seem to exclude based on scores, which is unfortunate in my opinion, to not at least consider in such applicants if there are other areas in their applications were they stand out.
I honestly do not know why I didn't get invited. I like to think that I am no weird (I have been tested ). AOA. Step score isn't an issue for me both for step 1 and 2ck on which I performed well, I just don't think you can't be nice to others about it. I have a modest amount of research and pubs. I have been getting several top-tier program invites, which is why I just decided to vent, as I really liked my away. I haven't read my letter, but so far I have heard in prior interviews that "everyone who has worked with you seem to really like you". So, who knows.
Being a "good test taker" isn't the only reason someone gets a high score on step. People who had a high step score put in more work than you did to get that high step score. Just like people who have AOA put in more work to get AOA. Guess what? This is a hard working specialty, and work ethic matters. Keep making excuses for your low performance. I'm sure it will serve you well on interviews. lol
