Can anyone who has interviewed/spent time at Duke recently please shed some light on the program? I'm trying to plan my Sub Is for this summer and it would be a great location for my family. I've heard really mixed things though - some people say it's on a great trajectory with really strong research and receptive faculty. Some other people say it's pretty malignant (supposedly they fired one of their PGY-4s a few years back for no reason and he had to finish at another program?) Really hard to separate the truth from the rumors.
Honestly that’s not really a reason to NOT do a sub i there.
The nice thing about doing a sub i is you see first hand what EXACTLY life is like as a resident at that program. The only answer that is accurate is your own impression.
That being said I know people who did a subi at duke and loved it and I know people who weren’t about it. I think you just have to fit the culture of the program essentially.
Whats their culture like?
Would be sic to work in Miguel Nicolelis lab if you match at Duke.
Heavy workload, great faculty. You get a research day built into your week so you can still be prolific while being a junior resident. Sampson is awesome but doesn't operate much. Great brain tumor/skull-based volume. Faculty very hungry. Not sure about hands-on experience for residents.
Would def consider for sub-I
Underrated program imo considering the faculty and research going on at DUMC. Strong place for starting an academic career. Formerly malignant in the 2000s but I think Haglund has reshaped the program to become similar to UW (his training program). Wouldn't say Durham is the most exciting place to spend 7 years but if you're looking for a strong academic experience you'll find it there.
did they ever select a "spine chair" ?
Why are there so many MGH grads there?
i heard that they are spinning off spine from neurosurgery and ortho. wonder the impact on the residents?
