Michael Jordan is famous too, knows well-connected people outside of neurosurgery too, has a great PR person too, doesn't have great grades either, and hasn't done any real research either.
He's a great and inspiring guy, but do you think he's a good fit for an academic neurosurgery residency spot? This could go on forever. Let's all just move on.

I'm late to the party but it seems like MGH matched the former NFL player and everyone's panties are in a bunch. Aside from jealousy, why? People are bashing his credentials, does anyone know for sure or are we all assuming his application was poor?

Everyone should move on and wish your current/future colleagues the best.
It's a small community, we should try to be supportive of one another.

Sounds like application particulars were confirmed by a couple people.
Let's move on.

Man people are so salty. The guy with a 196 had a fucking Science paper. I'm sure some programs value that more than your step score.
Step score isn't everything. And in b4 someone says "it's because you have a low step score" I didn't.

I'm sure some programs value that more than your step score. In this situation, one checks whether this was a one-off bad day or if the person has always struggled with standardized tests. Many times, it is a one off and part 2 is better by 20-30 points. That's why if you have a poor Step 1, would recommend getting Step II on the books before October of senior year so that the new improved score will be on the application at the time of initial screen.

Who encouraged the 196 to apply?! Most people would advise that person to gun for FM in the Bronx.
