med school prestige for residency
#1
is the med school you attend a big factor in your chances of matching at an upper program? if one were to go to a school ranked about 50th with 250 step 1 and 3-4 pubs would they have a better chance at a top program than one from a top 20 med school with a 248 step one with 2-3 pubs? how much of a factor is the med school you attend?
thanks

Given the scenario you outlined, I'd say the person from the school ranked 50th definitely does not have a better chance than the person from a top 20 school. Those stats aren't differentiating enough.

Having individuals from a top medical school in your program also elevates the level of the program in the eyes of others, including patients and future medical students who are looking to rotate. It seems like medical school matters a great deal.

No one publishes your 210 or 270 under your picture on their website, so Harvard or Yale Med looks a lot better than no name bottom tier school.

Having just finished our interview invite process I can definitely say that top school status plays a role that is equivalent to several pubs or at least 10 points on the step 1 in the minds of many of the people who were voting.

Keep thinking that if it makes you feel better inside. If you think that the quality of students at low tier state schools is the same as Harvard then you're simply delusional. Guess what? If you go to Harvard college you have a much better chance of landing coveted jobs in finance/consulting than if you go to South Dakota State. If you go to Harvard/Yale law you have a way better shot of getting a top big law gig or supreme court clerkship than you if you go to a low tier state school. If you go to med school at HMS/Penn/Hopkins or similar, you have a better chance of getting top tier academic residencies in competitive specialties. It doesn't mean that it's impossible to do so from state schools but the students at the top places have generally been top performers their whole life and get more benefit of the doubt.
