hey, just wondering how hard is it to match into NS? is it one of the toughest to match in or is it in the middle? what are the typical step scores? 240? 250+? any legitimate feedback would help. thanks guys

A quick search for the residency match results from last year will answer these questions. Here is the link:

In my opinion, neurosurgery is the specialty that cares the most about personal characteristics along with your stats. People match with scores all over the place and often a phone call from a big name in your department could land you a spot. Regardless, there are some things that just don’t fit within the specialty, such as laziness. While you may match with this characteristic, from my experience these people struggle hard in residency and it ends up screwing over the other residents. They slowly but surely get removed from the field. There are many other characteristics that will wean you out of neurosurgery as well. Get some exposure, real exposure to the people not just procedures, and see if you fit in.

It will serve you well in medical school to not ask questions you can easily look up.

Yes but how did only 28 out of 216 people not match. I thought that NS was regarded as a difficult specialty? Wouldn’t people who matched be more inclined to participate in this survey, skewing the results? Thanks

Fields like plastics, ortho, and ENT are actually a bit harder to match into. NS is in a tier just below it, however

From what I saw during medical school was that in first year there were a boat load of people interested in neurosurgery, most likely because of the prestige factor alone. Then step 1 came and 75% moved on to other specialties. Of the remaining students who were interested about half ultimately decided against neurosurgery after a clinical elective in it. So you have the people who are extremely dedicated to the field left who then end up matching. Statistics wise most students find out early enough if they wouldn’t be competitive so they filter themselves out. You’re left with a small group of applicants for a small number of spots

What would my chances be with a 245 step 1 and 2 and about 7-9 pubs most of which are clinical science?
