Subs and residencies
#1
Can someone give an idea of the best places to train for the different subspecialties? Not worried about the research part, wanna be in the OR as much as possible.is there a place to go if you wanna do tumor vs endo vs all the other fields?  is there a big difference and if not, where can I go to be in the OR all day for the best surgical training?

You get the same general training everywhere. If you want a specialty, that is what fellowship is for

unless you go somewhere where you can do solid infolded fellowships in multiple fields. High volume programs tend to have at least most infolded options other than peds. Both BNI and pitt have options for many infolded fellowships. IDK about UT but I hear good things about Indiana for heavy duty operative training. Mayo rochester as well.

Most residents have 1 to 2 years of elective time during the 7 years. Some programs allow a senior resident to pursue a fellowship, usually but not always at the home institutoon, during residency. These fellowships are more and more being recognized and accepted especially with the invention of CAST accredidation. Ive never heard it called exfolded but presumably that is referring to the traditional option, doing a fellowship after you graduate residency. Of note, peds currently rejects any suggestion of doing infolded fellowships.

Pretty much any place that post-grad fellowships and a residency program will allow their residents to pursue infolded fellowships. Someplaces, like Penn State, only offer infolded fellowships.

How common is it to have the opportunity to pursue an enfolded fellowship at another institution? I have seen where some chief residents may have done a cerebrovascular fellowship at another hospital and returned to their original residency program to finish out their chief year.
