You're describing a literal decade of attrition in a 30 surgeon department (Doug left in 2012). Pitt is a program that lets early career attendings cut their teeth on the high volume and develop a name for themselves either technically or through their research. They then go on to mid career positions. The cycle then repeats. I really doubt you can attribute people leaving to be division heads with seven figure salaries to political infighting. Those poor babies.
