Doing functional AND spine??

Is is possible for (community vs academic) neurosurgeons to do a mix of functional and spine? I'm an M2 potentially interested in functional, but don't necessarily want to end up at a major academic center, where there would be enough volume to exclusively just do those cases.

That's actually more likely than doing only functional, especially starting out. As you build your functional referral base you'll need to supplement with spine anyways.

I know of a few functional trained attendings who have mostly spine practices. Usually doing a lot of MVDs and other pain procedures as well.
