Best Programs for Academic Career
#1
I realize that there are several attempts at this thread, but let's try to have a conversation about who the true creme de la creme of training programs are for careers in academic neurosurgery.

Let's hear top tens in no particular order

Stay well everyone!

Just google "(institution name) neurosurgery faculty" for some of the top 10-20 programs and see where some of them came from. After a while, you'll notice trends.

Why UT Houston? Baylor’s connection with MD Anderson makes it more likely in the area

You need a couple of things to leave a place and have an academic career:
- Faculty connections. Can they call someone and get you the fellowship that you need? Do people from that place even do fellowships?
- Research. Look at the list of places with SPORE grants, and neurosurgeons with RO1s. Some places have tons of research but its pure basic science and none of the residents participate.
- Stability. Programs that have been around and have relative stability of faculty are much better positioned to get you the above.

There are two things that make assessing this a lot easier. The RRC knows all the players (heck, most of the true players are on it) and has a significant amount of insider information about programs. Places with 3 residents/yr generally have more "weight" to throw behind getting your career started. Second, the NIH knows a lot more about what good research is than you probably do. Programs with an R25 have convinced them that they know how to train people to do research.
