Fail to match
#1
How likely is it to match once you fail the first time? If one is really passionate and doesn’t care where they do residency, this must be attainable

Just another student here who obviously has not served on any interview committees, but it seems like it depends on the circumstance. If there’s a solid and permanent reason/characteristic that explains why you didn’t match, then it may be hard to overcome that. This could be personality, record, grades, score, etc. You can still overcome these weaknesses but it’s more difficult.

If you can fix the reasons that contributed to not matching then the likelihood will go up. Things like research, letters, etc. Even within reapplication there is variability (soap into prelim, grad and get a research position, delay grad and reapply as a 4th year MD) so it’s hard to compare success rates between groups. As a reapplicant you will have that status associated with you, but it’s still possible. The better your correct the weakness in your application the greater your chances. Get honest advice from your home or local department on what you need to fix.
