Institutions where a SubI helps match
#1
zdOmyWhat are the programs where doing a SubI helps your chances of matching there or is almost necessary to be considered? UCSF comes to mind but are there others? Any institutions have a reputation of preferring their own?

If you do really well most prefer somethin familiar to an unknown. A lot of SubIs kill their chances by being head cases.

Anyone have data or a general idea of how many SubIs programs do? Are there programs where no one applies to do a SubI or do they all get at least a few? Roughly how many are we talking per program (10-20 vs 40-50)? I know it varies from program to program but any insight would be helpful.

I would gather 5-10 for a lot of programs and then you have a few 20+ heavy duty programs but that's based on 4 year old data.

Thank you. So for most programs, you'll likely have <2 fellow subI-ers and possibly 0? Idk why but I always thought there were larger groups of 4-5 people doing a subI at the same time, making I think quite competitive to impress the PD.

Usually there is 1-2 at a time for most mid tier programs. Very top tier places can have groups of 5 at a time.

i would suggest that being the only subi can be tough because it makes the call pool ambiguous at times and your presence or absence more noticeable.

Mayo takes Sub-Is much more seriously than people just visiting for interviews.

UCSF. Almost all their residents did subIs.
