Spending research years at a closeby institution?
#1
Is this generally possible? If you are in UCSF, could you arrange to work under a PI at Stanford (assuming you had funding) during your two research years? Other examples: UCLA resident at USC or Caltech, Baylor resident at Rice or Houston resident at Baylor, Columbia Resident at Cornell etcetc.

If there is no already-present consortium between two institutions, is this possible? Perhaps might be easier if you are working for two PIs - one at home institution and another at the other uni.

Definitely possible but institution dependent on how much flexibility you have during the elective years, which usually comes down to how necessary you are for the call pool to function smoothly. We had a resident spend his research years at an institution several states away with no known research agreement in place that I know of. They had their own funding.
