Anyone else applying with 0 pubs or am I a clown?

Not in 0 pub club but my advice is try to write a review article in Cureus or World Neurosurgery. 0 pubs can be a red flag especially when it’s not too hard to write a review

Currently have 0 publications but not planning to apply like that. From all the sources I've looked at, there has not been a single person admitted in past cycles without at least some form of research and I highly doubt I'll be the exception.

I know two people like this in the past 4 years, and both had >270 step scores (~271 and 273). They matched at solid Big Ten programs but still missed out on interviews at the academic institutions (ie Michigan, Duke, MGH, UCSF). Got interviews at barrow though. Overall pretty rare

I did it with a mid 250s score. Though I had an MBA and started businesses which maybe made up for the lack of pubs.

Just do a research year…feel like it’s a soft requirement at academic places these days to have at least 1 dedicated research year if not a PhD/MS
