sub-i choice: Mayo AZ vs UCSD
#1
I have conflicting offers for an away and already have my other 2 aways set up. Apart from location, I'm not sure how to tease apart these programs. I feel like I've read everything on their websites. Any advice?

Ultimately, the two differences are probably going to be proven track record vs novel program, and academic focus vs private practice. UCSD is affiliated with a world-class research university and neuroscience department; Mayo AZ has no real affiliated university, though being in Phoenix, you could probably get hooked up with some folks at ASU. Aside from Bendok, Mayo AZ also has relatively few political connections within neurosurgery to help you get an academic job [if that is what you're shooting for], so that is one thing that potentially weighs against them. Lastly, UCSD is an established programs that has been around for many years. Though if read thorough posts on this forum it may have changed over the last few years, chairmen looking to hire you out of residency will at least know what they're getting. That being said, UCSD exists within the super competitive SoCal market, which like NYC is more litigious and so you're probably going to have less autonomy than at Mayo AZ, which is in Phoenix and also benefits from the Mayo model, where mid-levels do a lot of your scut, freeing you up for the OR. Mayo AZ also only has 4 residents so you're likely to be 1st-assist from the start. The mid-level assist @ Mayo AZ probably also means you'll have more time outside the hospital to enjoy life, and Mayo policy is to pay for you to attend conferences at which you are presenting (up to 15 trip days per year and 1200-1500 dollars per trip are covered - conference fees, hotel + airfare included in that sum). So I guess my advice would be to think about what you want you're life to be like in 10-15yr. IF you're thinking university employed or any basic science research element, I would think UCSD so that you can at least improve your chances of matching there. But if you're dead set on private practice, Mayo AZ is probably just as good of a choice and residency life would likely be easier.

I have the same dilemma for my next Sub-I. Former alumni at my school have strongly suggested going for UCSD, but I wondered why Mayo AZ was so discouraged in this post.

It’s a new program. Only person w any name is Bendok, and his reputation is more for being someone active on social media/Twitter and trying to grind on the NSGY politics circuit. Seems like he advocates well for his students and tries to promote his program, but it’s just not the same caliber as most other places. UCSD is tied to an actual university, is a busier program, and has ready access to the best neuroscience department in the country. So if you’re at all interested in an academic career, it’s a better choice. Plus Khalessi (like him or hate him) is the upcoming CNS president , so probably has better connections/a more powerful/meaningful chairman letter

Jenna Meyer? Why’d she have to go to med school in Israel then?

Apparently AZ bought their residents their own scopes at home for microsurgical practice. Looks like they are putting focus to operative skill. curious to see how their residents will end up in terms of ability
