Combined Peds + Adult Practice
#1

  1. How common is it to have a practice that is a combination of pediatrics and adults?
  2. Is such a practice mostly academic or private practice?
  3. What's the expected salary of a combined peds + adult?

It’s not common at all, if it even exists. If it exists it’s probably an underserved large region like Alaska or the Outback.

It depends what you mean. There are a lot of subspecialists who will do peds in addition to their adult practice (epilepsy, vascular, endoscopic skull base etc).many pediatric neurosurgeons will also do adult dysraphism and other peds type cases in adults. There aren’t many private peds jobs but in those the peds neurosurgeons will supplement their peds practice with adult general cases. There are a lot of jobs with mixed adult/peds call. Mixed practice is more common in smaller departments. True 50/50 mixed practice is pretty rare in part because most peds neurosurgeons don’t want to do general adult neurosurgery and vice versa.

What is a realistic split percentage between adults and peds? I was under the impression you need to do a certain amount of cases per year to be board certified, but I suppose if you don't care about that, you could do mostly adults with occasional peds?
