More Relaxed Residency Programs

Why are you assuming that the OP is a he?

^^ the literacy challenge lies with you. OP didn’t say they couldn’t work. They are trying to go to a program where unnecessary stresses are minimized but never did they say they were unable to be exposed to stress.

I’m sorry the ivory towers have convinced that your 120th hour of scut work and being 4th assist on another shunt will make you a better neurosurgeon… news flash — it won’t. There are better ways of using residents that some programs continue to implement. That doesn’t mean stress won’t exist but that also isn’t what OP is asking for.

The problem is that OP asked a group of people who are scared they won’t match if OP should add to the competition. Of course the answer was going to be “nah, you won’t cut it, don’t bother.”

OP will likely burn out and end up dumping all the extra work on his coworkers. Co-workers will be too scared to say anything. OP cruses through the program, surfing the sympathy wave, and ends up killing patients left and right upon graduation.

That describes a bunch of lazy-but-not-fired residents. What makes OP different?

Can we just answer the question? OP didn't ask for medical counsel, they wanted programs to look into.

Off the top of my head:

Stanford has float which can be nicer, MGH is pretty decent hours, Barrow has good support and Mayo as well.

Agreed, program with float or a lot of midlevels is going to be more cush. MGH has neither but is chill because it has low volume. They compensate by picking people who they think don’t need as many reps (like the usual plebs on this forum lol). Not at all bad if you’re exceptionally smart and want to be in academics.

Picking people who don’t need many reps…because they aren’t planning on operative a lot and you don’t need to have clipped any aneurysms or fused any backs to run a wet lab…

why train to become a surgeon if you aren't going to operate a lot? If you wanted to do research might as well have gotten a PhD
