Signing letter of intent?
#1
In the job search now and curious if signing a letter of intent would carry any legal risk? Is it fine to continue interviewing at other places after signing a letter of intent at one place? One of the places I interviewed at has been pushing to sign the letter of intent ASAP and I have not finished all my interviews yet.

Lastly, when do you start negotiating the contract/final deal? after signing the letter of intent or you have to negotiate the letter of intent itself?

Do yourself a favor, find a good employment law attorney and ask them these questions. If your not sure how to find such an attorney, google “physician sues employer”, and see who pos up. It will be money well spent.

You should have the basics of what you want before signing LOI because they will use it against you. In other words, pay, call, call pay, and anything else that is listed such as CME, vacation time, etc should be to your satisfaction before signing. Once you are at the contract phase they will try to hit you with the "we use a standard contract" BS. They can always add an addendum but the more you have what you want before that phase the less headache you will have.

And in term of its legal weight, does it say that it is binding or nonbinding? Unless it is binding or otherwise stipulates that you agree to stop interviewing, no, but if they are pressuring you to sign then you haven't asked for enough and should push back.

I wouldn’t sign a letter of of intent unless you actually “intend” on taking the job. I would ask a lawyer about the binding nature of it, I don’t frankly know, and it could vary state to state.

But if you’re still interested in interviewing, and exploring other jobs, don’t sign it
