Second Looks
#1
How important are second looks? I have heard of places that basically tell you they want you to do a second look, like U of Tennessee and Rush and others that don't mention it.

In general, how do Second Looks affect your rank and any other places people have heard "strongly encourage" second looks?
And when do you schedule these?

you can schedule around late Jan or mid Feb, right before match time so you are fresh in their minds. It can't hurt you, especially if they encourage it. It may actually push you from position 4-5 on the rank list to 2-3

A second look is another interview and it can raise or lower your ranking or do nothing. There is no predictable outcome so go do second looks if it will help you make a more informed decision about your rank list.

A second look is "sort of" a second interview. You should not expect an opportunity to meet with any particular faculty. It's typically just a chance to observe a routine day without any fake interview "performance" making things look better than they are. It DOES send a message that you are pretty interested in a program, but you can also accomplish this via email ... so it is certainly more about making those final re-arrangements for the top of your own list

very expensive, probably won't make much of a difference in your ranking either. Do it for yourself not for the program.
