(Hopefully) Future Neurosurgeon needing help!!
#1
Hi,
My name Saam.

I am an 8th grader (I know, I know) who's really interested in Neurological surgery.
Unfortunately, from what I've heard, it takes a minimum of 18 years to become a neurosurgeon. Is it possible to side-study for it during high school? And if so, what do I study (is there a book, I could read and study? Or an online course? Preferably a book).

Best regards,
Saam.

I would read some books written by Neurosurgeons such as: When the Air Hits Your Brain by Vertosick, A Day in the Frontal Lobe by Firlik and Do No Harm by Marsh. Those were pretty fun reads for me and give you a general view of the day of a neurosurgeon.

I am not sure what your knowledge is in neuroscience, but I would start very basic such as: Neuroscience for Dummies. Get a general understanding of the brain, how it works and the anatomy. In my opinion, anything you learn about neuroscience right now is an advantage. I didn't start learning neuroscience until medical school and will be starting residency in July.

Once you get into junior/senior year of high school, if you live near a university try and get into some kind of neuroscience research. I started my senior year of high school and it was a great learning experience and helped me get some better research experiences throughout undergrad and med school.

This person is a nerd. My advice is to just be a normal human being and do normal human being things.

I think that it's ridiculous to think you're going to be a neurosurgeon as an 8th grader. Make sure there is NOTHING ELSE you'd rather do prior to going down this path. If there is ANYTHING else you'd enjoy, do that instead. You'll thank me later.

how many applications have you reviewed.  It seems like every other one talks about how they have wanted to be a neurosurgeon their whole life.
but I agree, explore all other options.  If you can't shake it, then become a neurosurgeon.
