  UCSF vs UVA
Posted by: 270step1 - 12-31-2017, 06:54 PM - Forum: Sub-internships - Replies (10)

Can only do one second look. My chairman said uva has trained most chairmen but UCSF has Mitchell Berger. Which 2nd look should I do?

I have a good step 1 and over 20 pubs so I know I'm competitive LOL

  Match

Can we have an open discussion about the match?

This process sucks.  There has to be a better, more efficient, cheaper system.  I propose two alternative ways for programs to obtain talent:

1) Super match.  All interested applicants are invited to attend a national meeting in the fall, or even spring, before the application year (i.e. can be part of AANS or CNS).  This phase would be at the applicants expense.  Programs would have a booth in the exposition for the program to display which aspects they want to emphasize, and a sign-up for interviews to be conducted during the conference.  Following this, the programs would go back to their respective institutions and discuss the applicants.  Thereafter, they would invite whomever they have interest for an on-site interview.  This phase would be at the program expense.  Offers would take place either on a rolling basis, or after an expressed date by which sufficient programs could have a face to face with sufficient applicants.

2) Recruiting/national signing day.  This would work much like the NCAA does for football and basketball.  Programs could recruit applicants over a period.  On-site visits etc.  During the M4 year there would be a national-signing day where applicants could express their desire to accept a specific offer from a program.

What are the most country club programs?  I want good training, but no need to beat myself up.   Rounds at like 7, couple of cases, home by 5.  I've heard some names thrown around but curious who else.  Thx

  When did you know?
Posted by: Guest - 12-23-2017, 01:06 AM - Forum: General interest - Replies (3)

To all the attendings/residents out there: when did you know you wanted to pursue a career in neurosurgery? College? M1? Rotations? The day you realized your Step 1 was good enough? Curious to know if it’s even worthwhile to pursue an interest as an M1/M2 in terms of seeking out research and mentorship opportunities if you don’t know what your step score is like and if you haven’t actually rotated on a neurosurgery service.

Would appreciate if current residents and interviewing candidates can give advice to the upcoming generations of neurosurgeons, especially, in terms of what to do and not do on the trail/ during interviews..

Has anyone had any experience at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville? I know it's a pretty new program, I just happen to have a lot of family in the area so i'm considering doing an away there.

thanks!

  Programs with overseas rotations?
Posted by: RisingM4 - 12-20-2017, 09:11 PM - Forum: On the trail - Replies (20)

Which programs involve spending times at a hospital in another country during training? I know UVA spends time in New Zealand and I've heard of opportunities at UWash in England. I'd like to spend some amount of time in the UK or Canada to see neurosurgery in a different perspective.
